The Text
In many times of our life, we may come across something that is contrary to our moral values. And sometimes we may be in a dilemma like the couple in the film. Something or somebody wants to lure us into doing something indecent to realize one’s dream. As far as morality and laws are concerned, it’s obvious that to do so is guilty. However, if not taking so-called universal rule/common sense into account, personally I think it’s acceptable, in certain aspects. Judging from the video clip I’ve seen, I’d suppose that this Indecent Proposal is not one of the aspects I mentioned just now. According to principles of economics1, compared to the billionaire, the “husband” (I add comma here because I don’t know whether he is going to be an ex-husband) has neither comparative advantage nor absolute advantage, let alone the opportunity cost of doing that is too much for him, so the trade is bound to fail. I want to quote a sentence the wife have said to end my speech, “Clothes are for sale. I’m not.” And neither do marriage.
Postscript
The speech was originally written in my freshmen year in college.
I was studying the course using Mankiw’s version back then. ↩︎
