3DS Homebrew 101

Disclaimer

The post is barely a collection of tools for my future reference, and will NOT get updated as I maintain it inside Obsidian now.

It contains content including:

  • How to achieve code execution to run custom firmware on 3DS
  • How to run games in Citra one dumped from legitimate game cartridges
  • Recommended Apps on 3DS w/o any intro
  • Where to get cheat code (to run in OFFLINE SINGLE-PLAYER games)

However, it WILL NOT tell you:

  • How/Where to download pirated games
  • How to install unauthorized game copies on 3DS
  • How to upgrade the charging port to USB Type-C
  • How to do resource unpacking of 3DS games
  • How to get into the digital world of Love Plus series to date with gals

PSA: Piracy is still discouraged even though the following lines sound quite suspicious (added the fact that the hardware has been officially discontinued for more than two years as of writing).

To decrypt a .CIA file, I need to install it on my (hacked) 3DS, dump it into Citra using threeSD I mentioned above. The process can be tedious if I gotta a lotta CIAs.

The guide on GBAtemp offers a Batch CIA 3DS Decryptor.bat on GitHub w/ a full set of tools. Be sure to put aes_keys.txt into the folder, then just put .cia and .3ds games into the folder, run Batch CIA 3DS Decryptor.bat, and after a few minutes we’re good to go w/ the decrypted .cci game.
